Gene Transfer and Resistance Plasmids in Aquatic System

RESULTS

The frequency of R plasmids in E. coli population in Lake Ontario water (Marina Entrance) was 9.7% in 0.5 mL of Lake Ontario (Marina Entrance) water samples vs. 0.006% in 0.5 mL in drinking water. Moreover, the R plasmids against kanamycin were 1.2% in 0.5 mL of Lake Ontario water (Marina Entrance) samples vs. 0.003% in

RFLP analysis on plasmids of aquatic wild type E. coli obtained from Lake Ontario at 10 °C that was digested with EcoRI. Lane M, molecular size marker (Marker, Ultra Range); Lane C is the control (pUC19), lanes from 1, 3, 4 and 6 are kanamycin resistant plasmid, lanes 2 and 5 are ampicillin resistant plasmid
